Anniversary

So, 2.5 years together! Maybe some of you are out there thinking geeez lady, 2.5 years ONLY?! I’ve been married for {insert years here} already! But to us it’s quite a big deal. This is my first relationship you see, and I was so scared of being forever alone for all those years! πŸ˜‰ And not only that: we have had some rough times too.

When we were not even 4 months together for example, the boyfriend flew to South America to go backpacking. This meant 2.5 months of not knowing when I would speak to him again, and if he had survived the hike he was on! And I missed him so much. I was so used to having him around and all of a sudden I didn’t even know when I would get a reply to my messages.

After him being home for one month only it was time for me to board a plane: I was leaving for nearly seven months. ALONE! I had never been all by myself and here I was, all by myself on the other side of the world. Sydney! We skyped often, and watched suits together via Skype (“three… two… one.. PLAY!”). I can tell you: long distance relationships are very very very hard. But we managed, and against what most people predicted we were still together and happier then ever when we could finally see each other again.

And now we live together! Some of my friends were shocked, they thought it was soooo early, but to me it all made sense when he asked me if I wanted to share my apartment with him. We were together nearly every weekday, so why not move in together? And I’ve never regretted this decision: he’s the best roommate I could ever ask for. He even does his half of the cleaning chores!

To celebrate us being together for 2.5 years we decided to go out for dinner at Publieke Werken. This is one of our favourite things to do you know, we both love food so much! And I enjoy going out with him for dinner because he always lets me have bites of his plate so that I get to taste twice as many dishes πŸ˜‰

First impression

We entered the building and were a bit confused, to the right was what seemed to be a restaurant but a “closed meeting” was held there, and to the left was a very crowded bar… Luckily the bartender saw us, and he waved us to walk through the bar into what seemed to be the second half of the restaurant. It was pretty crowded but not too loud: the interior was modern yet cosy.

They had many special beers, which we really liked! They also seemed to have a variety of stronger drinks.

Staff

All members of staff seemed to know what they were doing and were very hospitable. It was a busy night so they did not have much time for every individual table, but we were still satisfied with the experience.

One funny note: there were a lot of special beers of which we ordered a few, and there seemed to be a new girl serving the drinks. She looked at the glass that was meant for our table and said “ehhh.. Beer?” The boyfriend ordered a random beer of the list, so even if she had given us the wrong one we wouldn’t have noticed, haha!

The food: 3 course menu

They had ample variates on the menu for those who eat fish and meat. They also had a three course menu available, which allowed us to choose from 3 dishes per course. We opted for the menu as it was pretty nice! We shared bites of our dinner so basically I tasted six instead of three, yay me!

For starters I had something with veal I think. It was plated like a classic carpaccio or vitello tonato: thinly sliced meat topped with rocket lettuce, dressing and hazelnuts. Very tasty! It lacked some salt but that was nothing we couldn’t fix, and we both enjoyed it very much. The boyfriend ordered chorizo croquettes: so yumm! They were flavoured perfectly, I loved the saltiness and distinct flavours. Unfortunately my stomach reacts very badly to chorizo: otherwise I would have liked some more!

The main part of our dinner was a little less special but still tasty. The boyfriend had a chicken fillet wrapped with bacon, which was a bit too salty in my opinion but had a delicious sauce with onion and port wine, and I had a skewer with beef which was very nice and tender. They didn’t ask me how I’d like it cooked, but it was a perfect medium-rare! The plating was o.k.: we got these huuuuge plates with only a little bit of meat and veggies on them which looked a bit sad :p However, the sides were delicious and made the main course more special: I’m crazy about french fries πŸ˜‰

Most important part: dessert! I ordered white chocolate mousse, which is usually served with raspberry sauce but I asked for caramel sauce instead as I, for some reason, never really like fruits in my dessert. Luckily this was no problem and my dessert was in one word HEAVEN! I love chocolate mousse, and even though this was a white version it wasn’t overly sweet like it normally is. The boyfriend ordered some sort of lemon curd pie, also very nice. I loooove desserts… I had been looking forward to this the whole dinner!

Conclusion

All in all we had a positive experience at Publieke Werken. The food was sometimes simple, sometimes surprising but overall tasty. Staff was properly trained, a bit busy but friendly, and we loved the special beer options.

I would recommend going here for a simple but good dinner! And do try their white chocolate mousse πŸ˜‰
