Recipe for success

Let’s be honest: we all have to start somewhere. When I started living on my own, the only ‘cooking’ I did was follow the instructions on packages! Assemble ingredients, follow instructions, add flavouring from said package… And eat. Simple, but super boring!

The first recipe I dared to experiment with, was a recipe for simple meatballs. I started adding more and more flavour, and learned so much from it! If you’d like to see my recipe how it is now, I refer you to this fail-proof recipe blog.  Meatballs are not only delicious to eat, but super easy to make in large batches for parties and/or storing in the freezer for later use. It’s fail proof, and a guaranteed recipe for success!

Asian meatballs

Anyway, it had been quite a while since I had experimented with my meatball recipe. So when I saw a recipe for Asian meatballs by Dutch blogger Slowfoody, I got totally inspired! Naturally I didn’t want to copy her recipe, so I brainstormed for a while and read some blogs about Asian flavours before I put together the recipe I’d try. I tweaked it a bit along the way, so it’s now perfect in my opinion!

Asian meatballs with plenty of sweet 'n sour sauce.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 45 minutes
Total Time 1 hour
Servings 40 meatballs

Ingredients

For the Asian meatballs

  • 500 g minced meat
  • 50 g breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 cm fresh ginger grated
  • 2 shallots finely cubed
  • 2 garlic cloves grated
  • 1/2 stalk lemongrass minced
  • 1/4 tsp sambal manis
  • 1/2 tsp salt

For the sweet 'n sour sauce

  • 1 tsp 5 spices
  • 1 tsp sambal manis
  • 8 tbsp brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp water
  • 6 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 4 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 cm fresh ginger grated
  • 1 1/2 stalk lemongrass minced

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius. In a large bowl, mix together the minced meat, egg, bread crumbs, shallots, ginger, lemongrass and garlic.

  2. Add the spices, salt, oyster sauce and sambal manis. Mix well. (You can fry a bit of the mixture to test the flavour first) Form small balls out of 1 tbsp of the mixture, and place on an oven tray with 1 cm in between. Place them in the oven for 20 minutes, and let cool.

For the sauce

  1. In a small saucepan, heat up the water with the brown sugar and honey. Crush the garlic cloves (so you can take them out later) and add to the mixture. Let simmer.

  2. Once the brown sugar has dissolved in the water, add the other ingredients: grated ginger, minced lemongrass, rice vinegar, sesame oil, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sambal and the spices. Let this simmer for around 5 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken.

  3. Carefully taste to see if it is to your liking. Take the pan off the heat, and remove the garlic cloves.

  4. Add the meatballs to the sauce, and enjoy!
