Hiiyaa! I’m going to change things up a bit and blog about a subject for once. Exciting, right?! Let’s see how this goes! Today I’d like to talk about the so-called foodie culture.
When can you call yourself a foodie? Am I a foodie: I definitely think so….
I got this idea from a girl named Nina, who kindly asked me for an interview! How cool is that, that sounds almost like I’m a celebrity. No, it wasn’t like that: she is writing her master thesis about foodies and needed to interview some actual foodies about their point of view.
I actually planned to write about the foodie culture, but I already wrote so much about the interview and being a foodie that I’ll leave that for next time.
First I’ll briefly explain the interview. Here’s how it went… I received an e-mail from Nina, explaining to me who she was and how she found me on Instagram because I used the hashtag #Dutchfoodie. She explained that she needed people to interview about foodies and instagram: why is it that we feel the need to share pictures of what we ate?
She kindly asked me if I would meet up with her for an interview, and I agreed. First of all because I was very curious, being a foodie and all… But also because I know from friends and former students at my education that it can be very difficult to find people willing to participate in surveys or interviews.
Anyway, we met up on the Monday after that and enjoyed our coffees in the sun. It was so nice out! She was very kind and we first had some small talk, as it was easier to have an interview when you are somewhat familiar with the person you are speaking with. Then we spoke about food, instagram and food choices (biological, vegetarian, fair trade etc) for a very long time. My friends don’t seem to be very interested in food you know, so I was very happy to finally have someone to discuss all this with!
Being a foodie
So, what does being a foodie mean? I Googled it (Hurray for Google!) and here’s what Wikipedia says:
“A foodie is a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and alcoholic beverages. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger.”
Hah! That is so me. When Nina asked me if I was a foodie I said yes, but a bit doubtfully because actually I had no idea what being a foodie actually meant. Now that I know, I can say with 100% certainty that yes, I am a foodie. And I love it!
For me, being a foodie means not only enjoying the food itself but also discovering something new. Ever since I started my gap-year I have changed my diet one bit at a time: I kept discovering new ingredients and learned so much about the health benefits they can have! Chia seeds, flax seeds, spinach in my breakfast (whaaat!) and smoothie bowls. I’ve started experimenting with the Asian and Mexican cuisine and have learned to appreciate specific herbs like turmeric. I’m now trying to eat less bread/pasta/rice/potatoes and use less milk: not to lose weight but to see what effect this has on my body. It’s all so interesting to me, I even started borrowing books about food in a scientific point of view in the library!
But not only do I learn a lot about health benefits and stuff, I also still really enjoy stuffing my face with carrot cake or a hamburger.
A few weeks ago we went to a foodtruck festival and o my god, we loved it! So much to choose from, we shared four different things AND I took a piece of carrot cake home, hell yes. You can see three of the burgers we shared in this post! The fourth was not that pretty but delicious 😉
Sharing is caring, or..?
Sometimes I wonder if anyone cares that I am a foodie, that I cooked something cool, or that I had a smoothiebowl for breakfast. Sometimes I wonder. I try to keep my work and personal life separated (that’s a joke: I wish my blog was my work): I haven’t linked my blog-Instagram to my personal Facebook and I don’t really post the recipes or blog posts there, either.
But anyway, it’s still my blog right? So I get to spam about being a foodie and no one can stop me 😀
I’ll cut this post short for now, hope it was enjoyable to read!
I’ve noticed I have some regular visitors, yay! So exciting. I’m really glad to have you all here 🙂 I would like to ask a favour. I know nearly all of us web users are using Ad-block, including myself. However, if you turn ad block off at specific websites, like mine, you help us bloggers develop further. I want to continue blogging, as I still have so much to write about! 😀
